Conquerors, Minarets and Plov – A journey through Uzbekistan

Standing beneath the towering Bukhara Minaret, I feel as though I’m stepping into the pages of those old childhood stories. The tales of Genghis Khan and Amir Temur are woven into the very stones here, echoing in the ancient walls and whispering through the narrow streets. I remember reading of Genghis Khan, whose armies stormed these lands, sparing this very minaret that now rises defiantly into the sky. Then later, Amir Temur, the mighty ruler from Shakhrisabz, who envisioned an empire that brought Uzbekistan to the centre of the world’s trade and culture, leaving behind the grand, blue-domed cities of Samarkand and Bukhara as his legacy.

Whilst walking to the minaret, only 10 minutes from my hotel, Bukhara feels like a bridge between past and present. I start to recall further stories of the Silk Road where exotic treasures were traded and transported by camel led caravans, I can almost hear the footsteps of ancient merchants and feel the shadows of the mentioned conquerors, who once stood where I now stand.

In Uzbekistan, the past is more than a memory; it lingers, timeless and unforgettable, in the very air around me.

I have been on a small, guided group tour of Uzbekistan invited and organised by Regent Holidays , that has left me breathless from the sites and experiences we have done in a short spell of time.

It was a 7 night whistle stop trip, including 1 x overnight flight to get there, we had 2 nights in Tashkent, 2 nights Bukhara and 2 nights Samarkand.

Transport was made by modern comfortable high speed trains. Flights are possible between these cities, but timings were better by train and with less check in times, train was more convenient and just as fast in total travel time. We also had the bonus of meeting and talking to locals.

Tashkent

The first thing that struck me about Tashkent was the surprise in how I was confronted with a modern vibrant metropolis. Then, when I thought about it, the city was completely devasted and rebuilt from an earthquake in 1966.

But, as you tour the city, you start to see the striking contrasts of the rebuilt buildings of past and present blending in seamlessly.

You quickly notice the more recent Soviet occupation with buildings and monuments built in their concrete utilitarian style, that still leaves me in fascination and awe. You will also see the architecture of late 19 ^th century Russian imperialism before the Soviets took over – such as Grand Duke Nikolay Konstantinovich’s palace, an ostracised member of the Russian imperial family, that done a lot of good work for Tashkent and its population.

A visit to Amir Temur Square you will find the larger-than-life statue of the great man himself on horseback and the soviet style building of Hotel Uzbekistan as its background.

Then in contrast there is the Khast Imam Complex, the spiritual heart of Tashkent. Here, we marvelled at the ornateness of blue-tiled mosques and madrassas, and find the world-famous Osman Quran, one of the oldest in existence. The peaceful courtyards and intricate architecture are a perfect introduction to Uzbekistan’s rich Islamic heritage.

The Chorsu Bazaar is a must visit, a bustling marketplace that has been active for centuries. Wander among the colourful stalls filled with spices, fruits, and textiles, soaking in the sights and sounds of this timeless trading hub. Be sure to sample freshly baked nan bread or a steaming samsa from a local vendor – the perfect mid-morning snack.

There are further reminders of the Soviet occupation in the Metro where Cosmonaut’s Station, is dedicated to Soviet space exploration and astronomy. Finally the obligatory tall TV tower station that the Soviets seem to have enjoyed building, possibly as a reminder to west that we are still here. Here the views show you how sprawling this metropolis is and is spectacular with the Chimgan mountains as a background.

BUKHARA

Bukhara, often referred to as the “City of a Thousand and One Nights,” is a contrast to Tashkent. This is a city that takes you back in time to the 11 ^th to 14 ^th centuries. It is a living museum with over 2,000 years of history and culture that enchants every visitor. This ancient Silk Road hub is a step back in time to an era of bustling caravanserais and grand bazaars.

Its winding alleys, sun-drenched courtyards, and majestic blue-tiled domes reflect a past rich with trade, learning, and art. Bukhara’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a treasure trove of architectural wonders, from the towering Kalyan Minaret (built in 1121 and spared by Ghengis Khan in 1220) to the serene Lyabi-Hauz square. Every corner whispers stories of emirs, scholars, and merchants who once called this city home.

The Ark Fortress, once the seat of Bukhara’s rulers, offers a glimpse into the opulent lives of the emirs while bearing witness to the city’s turbulent past. And amidst the bustling bazaars under ancient domes, you can almost hear the echoes of Silk Road traders bargaining over spices, silk, and gold.

Bukhara is more than its landmarks; it’s a city alive with traditions. Whether sipping green tea by the Lyabi-Hauz pool, marvelling at intricate embroidery, or tasting the region’s famous Plov, every experience feels like a connection to the city’s timeless spirit. In Bukhara, history isn’t just preserved—it thrives, woven into the fabric of daily life and waiting to be discovered by those who seek its magic.

SAMARKAND

Samarkand, the “Jewel of the Silk Road,” is a city that dazzles with its storied past and architectural splendour. Once the capital of Amir Temur’s vast empire, it became a centre of art, science, and culture, drawing scholars and traders from across the ancient world. Walking through Samarkand’s historic heart feels like stepping into a living tapestry, where grandiose monuments rise against the clear Uzbek sky, telling tales of ambition and brilliance. The Registan Square, with its trio of magnificent madrasas, is a breathtaking sight that epitomizes the city’s rich legacy of craftsmanship and learning.

Every corner of Samarkand holds a story. The majestic Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum, where Amir Temur rests, is a masterpiece of Timurid architecture with its azure dome and intricate tilework. Nearby, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis unfolds like a visual poem, its rows of mausoleums adorned with some of the most exquisite tile mosaics in the Islamic world. And then there’s the sprawling Bibi-Khanym Mosque, a symbol of Temur’s grand vision, its imposing structure a testament to the empire’s glory.

In Samarkand you will also learn about Ulugh Beg, 15 ^th Century ruler and Grandson of Amir Temur. He dedicated his life to science and astronomy, transforming Samarkand and Bukhara into centres of learning. His works influenced astronomers across Asia and Europe for centuries.

But Samarkand isn’t just about its monuments; it’s about the vibrant culture that continues to thrive. Stroll through the bustling Siyob Bazaar, where the scent of spices and the chatter of vendors evoke the city’s Silk Road heritage. Taste the sweet, sun-kissed fruits of the region or sample the city’s famous nan bread, baked in traditional clay ovens. In Samarkand, the past isn’t just remembered—it’s celebrated, offering visitors a timeless journey through the crossroads of history.

CUISINE

Whether you’re a history enthusiast with an appetite or a food lover seeking new flavours, Uzbekistan’s culinary landscape promises to delight. From sumptuous kebabs to hearty stews and tandoor-baked specialties, the dishes here are as rich as the country’s cultural tapestry, drawing on the vibrant traditions of Turkic and Persian influences to create unforgettable meals that fuel both body and soul.

No dish captures the spirit of Uzbek cuisine like Plov (also known as pilaf or palov), a simple yet celebratory meal of rice, slow-cooked lamb and aromatic spices.

Tasting Plov in its homeland is an essential experience for any food enthusiast. Whether enjoyed from a humble street-side vendor or at one of the country’s many home restaurants specialising in Plov.

Each region brings its own flair to this iconic dish. From the delicate, saffron-accented Tashkent Plov to the richer, meat-heavy version of Samarkand, every variation carries the imprint of centuries-old traditions.

EXPERIENCES

Traveling with a small group tour, especially with a specialist like Regent Holidays, offers an authenticity that larger tours simply can’t replicate. Our journey was rich with unique, intimate experiences—like visiting a local ceramist whose workshop and home were seamlessly intertwined. Tucked behind an unassuming street entrance, we stepped into a lush courtyard filled with fruit trees, vibrant ceramic tiles adorning the walls, and the cheerful sounds of canaries in their cages. This family business, passed down from grandfather to son and then to grandson, gave us an inspiring glimpse into the artistry and resilience of Uzbek traditions. We learned how the family adapted to restrictions during the Soviet era, when working from home was prohibited, and saw first hand how their craft evolved over generations.

In both Bukhara and Samarkand, we dined in home restaurants (restaurants built around a private home, giving a near authentic experience of home cooking), sharing Plov prepared by locals. Watching the cooking process and hearing about the regional differences in flavours and ingredients gave us a deeper appreciation for Uzbekistan’s culinary heritage. A visit to a winery was another unexpected highlight. Uzbekistan has a long tradition of winemaking, introduced by Alexander the Great when he brought grapevines from Greece. Despite interruptions during the Soviet period, this tradition endures. We sampled a variety of local wines, a reflection of the country’s relaxed attitude toward alcohol, even as an Islamic nation.

Train transfers between cities added another layer to the experience—modern high-speed trains not only made travel efficient but also offered a chance to connect with everyday Uzbeks. Conversations in the buffet car were a highlight, as locals eagerly shared stories about their lives and expressed genuine curiosity about ours.

The carefully chosen hotels added to the charm, blending local style with modern comforts. One standout was a beautifully converted Uzbek house with a central courtyard, where Islamic-style décor created an atmosphere steeped in cultural authenticity. In Bukhara we stayed right in the heart of the pedestrianized old town that felt like stepping back to the 14th century—a stark contrast to large chain hotels often located on city outskirts. With knowledgeable guides providing immersive insights into Uzbekistan’s history and culture, our small group format allowed for more personal interactions and deeper exploration.

By the end of the tour, I left Uzbekistan not only captivated by its beauty and heritage but also inspired to explore more of the region. With Kazakhstan and Mongolia now high on my travel list, I can’t wait to delve further into the treasures of Central Asia.

River cruising, however, tends to offer a more low-key entertainment experience. This is because river cruising is as much about the onshore experiences as it is about being on board. It’s more about soaking in the local culture and ambiance than dazzling shows.

So, who is river cruising for? It’s ideal for those who relish being on land, exploring new places, and embarking on fresh adventures.

It’s for travellers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination, appreciating the changing landscapes and the cultural nuances of each stop.

What sort of people will you be cruising with?

The demographic has been getting younger in recent years, with the average age now ranging from the 50s to 70s. Of course, this can vary based on the cruise line, the specific itinerary, and even the season in which you travel.

River cruise passengers are typically well-travelled individuals with a keen interest in history, culture, and a more leisurely pace of exploration.

Thanks to the smaller size of river cruise ships compared to their ocean-going counterparts, there’s a more intimate and social atmosphere on board. This setting naturally fosters interactions among passengers during shore excursions, meals, and other onboard activities.

What is dress code on a river cruise?

The good news is that river cruising is less about strict dress codes and more about comfort and practicality. Unlike ocean cruises, where you might encounter a variety of dress codes, river cruises keep it simple.

During the day, the emphasis is on casual and comfortable attire, perfect for exploring or relaxing onboard.

Evenings, however, typically call for smart casual dress. While there are no formal nights on a river cruise, some guests do enjoy dressing up a bit for special occasions like the Captain’s Welcome Dinner or the Farewell Gala.

But don’t worry, it’s nothing as formal as a black-tie affair. A dress shirt and jacket for gentlemen, and a cocktail dress or blouse with trousers for ladies, are as dressy as it gets.

Why are river cruises so expensive?

I’m often asked about the cost of river cruising. Let’s tackle this elephant in the room head-on.

River cruising isn’t a budget option, but its value shines when you factor in everything it includes. It’s not just about the expense – it’s about the luxury and experience you receive in return.

Compared to top-tier holidays in the Caribbean or elite Mediterranean hotels, river cruising stands out as a more value-laden choice, often at a lower cost. This is all-inclusive luxury, combining enriching journeys with top-notch amenities and services.

For those dipping their toes into river cruising for the first time, I often recommend starting with the Danube or the Rhine.

Why?

These rivers offer the longest point-to-point itineraries, providing a diverse array of stops and sights without the need for backtracking. This means more exploration, more discoveries, and, simply put, more to see.

However, if you’re a wine enthusiast, then tailoring your choice to your passion is key.

Consider the Bordeaux region, with its myriad chateaus, or the Rhone, both rivers a must for any wine lover. Or the Douro and the highlight of visiting Spain’s University city, Salamanca.

Your interests should guide your choice — after all, the best cruise is one that resonates with what fascinates you the most.

Each river has its unique allure. The Rhine, for instance, offers varied experiences depending on the stops included in your itinerary. It’s crucial not to assume that a cruise on the Rhine with one cruise line will mirror the experience offered by another. Each journey has its own character and highlights.

Speaking of highlights, there are a couple of must-see stops I always recommend on the Rhine.

First, the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, home to the world’s first printing press and the Gutenberg Bible. With only 48 of these incredible books surviving, each valued at around $6 million, it’s a stop that history buffs and book lovers alike will cherish.

Then there’s the Speyer Technical Museum. This is a hidden gem, boasting an expansive collection of boats, planes, spacecraft, trains, and cars.

I’m always surprised that this museum isn’t as widely talked about as Europe’s other top attractions. It’s a marvel that’s well worth your time.

Are river cruises choppy?

Rest assured, river cruising is characterized by its smooth and tranquil sailing. Unlike the often choppy seas, rivers offer a calm experience with minimal, if any, motion sickness.

Despite being smaller than ocean liners, river cruise ships are designed for stability and glide effortlessly through the water. They’re much larger than typical river vessels, ensuring a steady journey with hardly any turbulence.

So, you can expect a peaceful cruise, free from the worries of seasickness that’s sometimes associated with sea travel.

How to choose the best river cruise line for you

What is the dining like?

Mealtimes are where river cruising truly shines.

Expect fine dining with meals crafted by talented, professional chefs, an essential part of the river cruise experience.

Mornings usually start with a buffet breakfast offering a variety of hot and cold dishes.

Lunch is a leisurely buffet-style affair, followed by afternoon tea with a delightful sweet treat.

Dinner is a four-course culinary journey, and for those late-night cravings, midnight snacks are available.

Evening dining on river cruises is a relaxed and informal event, featuring free seating.

This arrangement allows you to change your dining spot each night, giving you the opportunity to mingle with different passengers you might have met on excursions or while lounging earlier in the day.

Most river cruise ships have one main dining area, the gastronomic heart of your floating hotel.

Are excursions always included?

However, this can vary depending on the cruise line. For instance, with companies like CroisiEurope and TUI, excursions are often optional extras.

For those cruise lines that do include excursions, it’s important to delve into the specifics.

What kind of excursions are offered? Are they limited to basic city walking tours, or do they provide a more immersive experience?

Also, inquire whether you have a choice of excursions at each stop as part of the package, or if these are considered optional extras.

Knowing the details of excursion inclusions can significantly influence your overall river cruise experience, so it’s a key factor to consider when selecting your cruise line.

How Many Passengers are On Board?

Earlier, we touched on the fact that the ships across different cruise lines are generally similar in size.

This is not by chance; it’s a necessity. All ships must fit within the dimensions of the locks and under the bridges they navigate.

This uniformity in size brings us to an important consideration when selecting a cruise line – the number of passengers on board.

On these similarly sized vessels, passenger numbers typically range from 130 to 200.

With 200 passengers, space becomes a premium. Often, this results in smaller cabin sizes and more crowded deck areas.

For example, Viking River Cruises, a brand frequently advertised in the UK, averages around 190 passengers. A glance at the top deck as a Viking ship sets sail reveals the contrast – it’s bustling with nearly 200 passengers, compared to the more spacious decks of ships carrying only 130-150 passengers.

Now, I’m not suggesting you should rule out a cruise with Viking or any other line based on passenger numbers alone. Often, the itinerary itself is the primary draw.

The key is to align your expectations with the reality of your chosen cruise line. Every cruise line we represent guarantees a wonderful experience, but understanding these nuances can enhance your overall satisfaction.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a River Cruise?

In most cases, the answer is no. Let me explain why.

Given the need for river cruise ships to fit into locks and under bridges, their sizes are quite uniform. This size constraint means adding a full balcony would encroach on your cabin space, resulting in a smaller room.

A more practical option is a Juliette balcony. These feature floor-to-ceiling windows that either slide open or lower halfway, offering the ambiance of a balcony without sacrificing cabin space. Some cruise lines offer double sized cabins, a notch down from a full suite, that have both a Juliette and full balcony, leaving you plenty of space within the cabin.

The base price for most river cruises usually corresponds to lower deck cabins. These cabins, closer to the water, often have smaller, sealed windows but are just as comfortable as those on higher decks, with the same amenities.

Considering how little time you actually spend in your cabin – busy with day excursions, basking in the sunshine on the top deck, or dining in the ship’s restaurants – these lower deck cabins can be a great choice, especially for budget-conscious travellers or those, like me, who prefer to indulge in more than one cruise a year!

Which cabins should you avoid on a river cruise?

When it comes to choosing cabins on a river cruise, it often boils down to location rather than the cabins themselves, as preferences can vary greatly among travellers.

However, there’s a piece of advice I often share based on both personal experience and feedback from fellow passengers – consider avoiding cabins at the rear of the ship on all decks.

The reason? Engine noise. While it’s never been a problem for me, I’ve heard from many light sleepers that it can be somewhat bothersome.

Another little tip- choosing a cabin closer to the restaurant and lounge can be quite convenient.

River cruise ships aren’t massive, but it’s always nice to have a shorter stroll back to your cabin after enjoying a delicious meal or a relaxing evening. ��

As for lower deck cabins, you’ll usually find them more toward the front of the ship, as the rear cabins are typically reserved for staff. This positioning can offer a quieter experience and is worth considering, especially if you’re sensitive to noise.

The Best Cruise for Northern Lights

The Norwegian Coastal Voyages operated by Hurtigruten and Havila have become a “must do holiday” in the same vein as the Orient Express and Route 66. After all, it is known as “The World’s Most Beautiful Voyage”.

The classic route is a 12-day voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes and back again. This 2,500 nautical mile journey not only takes you along Norway’s jaw-dropping coastline and into stunning fjords but also to the very heart of all things Norwegian. Shorter trips are also available.

Travel is all year and you can choose to journey in the winter for the Northern Lights or in the summer to see the Midnight Sun. In fact, using the four seasons of the year you can have four entirely different holidays on the same voyage!

The winter voyages are the most popular because of the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. In fact, when anyone asks me – “Where is the best place to see the Northern Lights?” – My answer is always Norwegian Coastal Cruise with Hurtigruten or Havila. Why? because they have all the ingredients to give you the best chance of seeing them!

However, the Coastal Express voyages are not like conventional cruises.

You will cruise in comfort but still be left feeling like an adventurer.

Why are these voyages different? And which cruise line you should choose – the ‘classic’ Hurtigruten or ‘new kid on the block’ Havila – Read on to find out.

Hurtigruten

What’s it like to cruise with Hurtigruten?

Sailing with Hurtigruten is so much more than a cruise and is different to what most seasoned cruisers would expect.

Calling at 34 ports and departing Bergen every day, the ships are in essence ferries.

They provide a transportation lifeline between cities and villages while exploring stunning fjords and UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the more than 1,000 miles of Norway’s pristine coastline.

This mixture of local encounters, spectacular scenery and additional optional excursions provides an unmatched opportunity to experience and interact with the beauty and charm of Norway and its people.

The ships have been built at different times as new ships have replaced old. But, in main they remain a similar size with only slight differences in design and passenger numbers (c500 passengers).

However, there is one ship that is older and is kept partly for nostalgic reasons and for those that appreciate the older style of sailing.

Unfortunately, that “older style” includes the rocking motion of an older ship, as there are no modern stabilisers!

This ship is usually a lot cheaper than the other sailings and, unless you are a seasoned sailor, is the ship to avoid.

What is the atmosphere like on board a Hurtigruten Ship?

Life on board is very informal and has a strong relaxed vibe, with no set dress code in the restaurants.

With the mix of adventure holiday makers and the local Norwegian people using the service as a ferry, dress code is very practical. You won’t feel out of place eating your fine dining meal in the restaurant in pullovers and walking boots!

So, when it comes to packing, your focus is on practical wear for the trip (comfy clothes and outdoor wear) without needing to worry about dressy clothes for the evenings (don’t forget if you are travelling in winter, you want to be ready to pop outside as soon as the Northern Lights appear!).

What are Hurtigruten cabins like?

This is not a cruise for those expecting the bling and glitz of traditional holiday cruising.

This is a cruise for those that want to explore on land as much as sailing to see more destinations. It is for adventure seekers and those that enjoy exploring and learning new things about a destination.

The cabins are in keeping with this kind of adventure. They are comfortable and warm but being compact and practical.

There is a choice from inside cabins to outside cabins that vary in price dependent on where you are situated on the ship. Also, outside windows vary from portholes in lower decks and a larger picture window in higher decks.

There are no balconies on Hurtigruten ships.

Polar and Arctic Superior cabins are the two more popular choice cabins and are similar in size. Arctic Superiors have better locations on the ship and come with a double bed configuration with a more updated décor. They also come with kettle in the cabin for a warming mug of tea.

There is one deck that has a promenade that circles the whole ship, so passengers will be walking past your cabin window if you are in an outside cabin. However, this isn’t too much of a problem as you are hardly in your cabin. Plus the deck (usually deck 5 on most ships) is convenient for all decks being in a central location.

I would also highly recommend booking the “Select” price band for complimentary coffee, tea and Wi-Fi.

Arctic Superior Cabin

What’s included on a Hurtigruten cruise?

Full Board is included with your cruise and if booking “Select” grade cabins, then complimentary Coffee, Tea and wifi are included too. There are refillable water stations throughout the ships.

Drinks and excursions are not included. As mentioned in essence the Norwegian Coastal Express is a ferry service. As such the drinks are sold separately to the cruise package and are governed by Norwegian law and prices.

The food served in the restaurant is based on local-sourced foods picked up daily from the visiting ports.

The breakfast and lunches are generally buffet based, whilst the evening meal is fine dining served to your table.

There is also a café where more simplistic dishes or pastries can be brought should you want something between meals or something different form the included restaurant meals.

There are no gratuities needed or expected on Hurtigruten as staff are fully employed under Norwegians laws and get paid well for the work they do. If you did want to contribute there are gratuity stations at the reception, where they ensure gratuities are paid out evenly amongst all staff.

What currency is used on board Hurtigruten?

Norway has its own currency the Norwegian Krone. But Norway is virtually a cashless society and cards are taken everywhere. On board everything can be charged to your cabin number and settled at the end of your trip.

Are the excursions worth it on Hurtigruten?

This cruise is much about being on land, as it is about sailing through one of the most scenic areas in the world. So, excursions are very much part of getting the full experience of this voyage.

Excursions are offered in all the main ports, happen every day and can be booked whilst on board. You don’t have to take an excursion as many of the ports are easily explorable under your own steam.

Every day the cruise team will give a briefing on what the following day will bring, with an explanation of the excursions available. They are happy to discuss what you can do under your own steam.

It is advisable to book any excursions that you want to experience in advance before you travel, as excursions are subject to availability (the Husky sledging is very popular and is advisable to book in advance). Give me a call and I can advise on which excursions to book in advance.

Where do Hurtigruten ships sail from?

The classic Norwegian Coastal Route that Hurtigruten is most famous for is a 12-day roundtrip from Bergen back to Bergen.

The trip can be broken down into smaller voyages and Suitcase Travel can help with logistics in flying from the UK including regional airports to fit in with your proposed trip. Everything will all be ATOL protected.

The Classic Voyage should not be confused with Hurtigruten’s expedition cruises or Hurtigruten’s Iconic Norway Cruises.

These voyages are closer to traditional cruises in that they have more inclusions, such as drinks and excursions.

Havila

What’s it like to cruise with Havila?

Havila is the new “kid on the block”. Hurtigruten had been the only provider of the Norwegian Government licensed ”Fast Route”. In 2021 the Norwegian Government opened up the route for more competitors and Havila started their services.

The Norwegian government’s aim behind this move was to protect the fjords and to achieve zero emissions for the route by 2030. Havila ships have been purposely built to run on LNG fuel with hybrid battery power for up to 4 hours.

(To be fair Hurtigruten have started to convert all their ships. Two of the Coastal fleet have been converted so far with the aim of converting or replacing them all by 2030.

The service and port visits provided by Havila are the same as Hurtigruten. The excursions are the same providers and experiences.

But the main difference is the newer and more modern ships that Havila offer.

The ships have been purposely built to suit the mix of freight, passengers and modern tourists and are much lighter and airier, making better use of space by designing from scratch.

What are Havila cabins like?

Havila Cabins are bigger and lighter with larger windows on outside cabins. They also have cabins that are better suited to families.

They have certainly given much thought to the modern tourist experience on the Norwegian Coastal Route – especially the fact that tourists spend longer on board than the locals – and have designed the cabins with this in mind.

Some cabins have balconies and all have coffee and tea making facilities.

What’s included on a Havila cruise?

The same is included as Hurtigruten – full board, wifi and complimentary coffee/tea.

On Hurtigruten ships, breakfast and lunch service usually takes the form of a lavish buffet. In contrast, Havila operates an a la carte approach to almost all meals, which they claim substantially reduces food waste.

Havila menus for breakfast and lunch are based on a small dish concept, allowing guests to order as much or as little as desired.

Are the excursions worth it on Havila?

The experience is exactly the same as Hurtigruten and excursions are well worth going on, although as with Hurtigruten it is possible to do things under your own steam within ports.

Where do Havila ships sail from?

The 12-day voyage is exactly the same as Hurtigruten being a roundtrip service from Bergen to Bergen via the North Cape.

Do Havila cater for solo travellers?

This is very much a holiday that is ideal holiday for solo travellers.

The World’s Most Scenic Autumn Rail Journeys

Autumn is well and truly here – the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness (John Keats).

Who doesn’t love the autumnal landscapes as the trees start to shed their leaves, the days get shorter and we long for comforting warmth to envelope us.

Why not soak up these amazing landscapes from the comfort of a train. A train window is a great way to soak up the glorious colours of passing natural landscapes.

Here are some of our favourite journeys.

The Centovalli

Travel from Locarno to Domodossala along the valley of the River Melezza watching forests of larch and chestnut turn an amazing palette of yellow, gold and brown with the autumn chill. The valley has such steep slopes that there is no major road to detract from its beauty, so this narrow-gauge two hour railway journey between the Swiss canton of Ticino and Italy is the best way to enjoy it. The name comes from the hundred side valleys that the train has to leap over by often spectacular bridges and viaducts, and the railway serves a series of stone villages huddled round Italianate church towers. From Intragna, a cablecar ascends to Costa for a delightful walk though walnut woods to Cremaso, and another stretches from Verdasio station to the unspoilt hill village of Rasa, which cannot be reached by car.

The Moselle Valley

From Koblenz to trier, less well known than the famous lines that go through the Rhine valley between Cologne and Frankfurt is the two hour railway that turns southwest from Koblenz along the north bank of the Moselle Valley to Germany’s oldest city, Trier. Leaving Koblenz, the Eltz Forest nature reserve surrounds Eltz Castle, one of Germany’s most dramatically sited fortifications. Neat ranks of vines climb above the railway and add to the colours of the trees. The villages stretch along the river with steep slopes of vineyards behind them.

Sagano Romantic Train

This shorter 25 minute journey from Japan’s Kyoto station to Saga-Arashiyama station is just as popular in autumn as it is in spring. The colours of the Japanese maples are intense in their richness. The open-sided or windowed carriages crawl along during the most scenic parts of the journey, some sections of line burrowing through an avenue of trees. The line crosses the Hozukyo ravine in the river valley, offering a view over an unbroken mass of autumn colour smothering the valley sides. The best time is mid-November to early December. The journey can be done both ways or by taking the train back to Kyoto from Umahori station, about five minutes’ walk from Kameoka Torokko station.

Canadian Wilderness

The 10 hour return trip on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train into the roadless wilds of northern Ontario is all about autumn colours. Operating from early August to mid-October, the train heads north for 114 miles beside lakes and rivers to reach the spectacular canyon carved by the Agawa River. It threads the mixed forest of the Canadian Shield and passes impressive granite rock formations. At the journey’s end, there is a 300-step climb to a viewing platform over the gorge.

Norwegian Forests

This six and a half hour journey from Oslo to Trondheim highlights that although Norway doesn’t have the widest variety of trees, it makes up for them in vast numbers. The Dovre Railway is named after the range of mountains it crosses at 1,006m to reach the Dovrefjell mountain plateau, home to a population of 300 wild musk ox. Birch, spruce and fir populate the forests flanking much of the railway to Norway’s former capital at Trondheim with farm buildings dotted in among them. The railway skirts Norway’s largest lake, Mjøsa to reach the winter sports centres of Lillehammer and Vinstra in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley. A steep, winding descent of a gorge lined with waterfalls that will soon freeze leads to the Trondheim lowlands.

Mount Washington Cog Railway

This three and a half hour return journey from Marshfield Base Station to Mount Washington is rightly famed for its autumn colours between mid-September and late October, and the world’s first rack railway is a great way to see them. Opened in 1868, the railway scales the highest peak in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, climbing above the tree line to highlight a 360-degree panorama and dramatic sunsets. Tree species and colours change as the train ascends, beech, birch and sugar maple giving way to red spruce and fir before reaching the sub-alpine zone of dwarf trees.

The Loire Valley

From Orléans to Nantes and beyond to Le Croisic, the Interloire line is seldom far from the river and its 15 châteaux. There is even an app to keep you company with information on what you’re looking at out the window (le Val de Loire vu du train). Local stopping trains allow the free carriage of bikes for those planning a linear journey between châteaux, many offering paths through their wooded estates for walking or cycling, such as the 15km of cycle paths around Chambord.

South Korea

Travelling from Seoul to Busan, this journey shows how few countries can rival South Korea for the brilliance of autumn foliage in October and November. The country’s longest railway journey links Seoul and its second largest city, Busan on the south coast, and a good way to cross the country, perhaps breaking the journey at Darjeon to visit the Jangtaesan Recreational Forest for its gingko and metasequoia trees and jaw dropping suspension footbridge across a gorge. Unless you’re in a hurry, skip the KTX high-speed route and take a slower train over the older Gyeongbu Line to enjoy some of the country’s best views and autumn colours along Korea’s busiest corridor. This journey can take between two and a quarter hours on the high speed route or a more leisurely five and a half hours on the slower train.

The Seychelles – March 2020

I have always felt that the travel industry has overused the words “Luxury” and “Paradise”, as these descriptive words can be subjective. For us at Suitcase Travel whether a customer is paying £500 or £50,000 for a holiday this is a luxury item to that customer. The same applies with “Paradise” some one’s idea of paradise can be completely different to someone else’s.

When I first put pen to paper for this blog it was 15 ^th March 2020, just as the world was coming to terms that they may have a pandemic on their hands. I was sitting on a beach on the island of La Digue in the Seychelles, in fact the same beach used for many of the famous Bounty Chocolate bar TV adverts – Anse Source d’Argent. The slogan “A Taste of Paradise” is going through my mind and I am thinking is this truly paradise?

The word Paradise originates from a Persian word for Garden and has been used as a term for the Garden of Eden in many religious scriptures, to which the Seychelles is also known. Whether your version of paradise is your garden at home, a rustic villa on a Greek island or the starkness of Antarctica, for me there are different forms of paradise, but the Seychelles is going to be among the top of my list.

The Seychelles’ charm lies in its isolation. The archipelago’s 115 idyllic islands are scattered over a good size of the Indian Ocean. They’re 500 miles from their closest neighbour, Madagascar, and 900 miles from the shores of the African mainland. Thanks to this seclusion, its beaches and forests are virtually untouched and rarely crowded.

Lyn and I were here having won several free nights’ accommodation at a Seychelles tourist board workshop – one of the rare perks of the job! The Seychelles makes a perfect destination for island hopping and multi stay. We are here only for one week having managed to get direct flights with British Airways and staying in three accommodations on the main island of Mahe and Praslin Island.

Day 1

Our first stop on arrival in the Seychelles is the Maia Luxury Resort and Spa. This resort, for us, was simply insane! The ultimate in luxury the resort is made up of 30 luxury and secluded spacious villas built into the lush hillside overlooking the bay of Anse Louis on Mahé. The beach is as nature intended, sandy, secluded and quiet, and the hotel offers wonderfully understated luxury. All Villas, with butler service, has its own infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. To get to the beach and restaurant you simply call down to reception and they send up a golf buggy to pick you up. If budget does not allow a full holiday here, I would recommend this as that special treat for honeymooners or celebratory holiday to spend last 2 or 3 nights here.

Day 2

Unfortunately, budget only allowed us one night and next morning we were off to Praslin Island by Ferry. The port was a bit manic but, with our prepaid tickets, it did not take us long to work out which ferry we needed and that all luggage goes in the rear to be picked up when you arrive at your destination. This ferry was only going to Praslin and its smaller neighbour, La Digue Island. The ferry took only 1 hour and we were met by taxi and taken to our second hotel the lovely Coco de Mer & Black Parrot Suites.

With just 40 rooms, the boutique Coco de Mer is an intimate retreat of relaxation. We are staying in a Standard Room overlooking the gardens with distant sea view. The rooms were comfortable with walk-in showers and separate roll-top bath. while the Superior Rooms are set just back from the beach with great ocean views. The 12 Black Parrot Junior Suites are located on an outcrop, offering more exclusivity and outstanding views across the water. We are here on Praslin for 3 nights and the Coco de Mer is quaint and relaxing. The hotel’s seafront views are amazing, but the beach is quite small, so most of the time is spent around the pool area. Due to lack of beach, we would recommend staying in one of the superior beach front rooms that has a patio garden area for sitting out in.

Days 3 to 4

It was on our second day that we took the short ferry ride on a day trip to La Dique island. The island immediately gave a different vibe to Praslin and Mahe. Firstly, there are no cars on the island and to get around is either by bicycle or Ox-Cart! Secondly the Seychelles in general is pretty much laid back, but La Digue feels another 2 steps back in time. To get to the famous beach Anse Source d’Argent we hired a tandem which took about 15 minutes. It was whilst chatting to fellow passengers on the ferry that we realised that this Corona Virus was becoming something serious and now sitting on this beach, it was hard to imagine what was going on back home and what was yet to come – at that moment the world around me was just simply beautiful.

Day 5

After one more day on Praslin we went back to the main island to stay on Mahe’s main beach and most popular beach, Beau Vallon. Situated on the northwest coast of Mahe, the beach is long, sandy with clear warm tranquil waters that are safe for bathing with plenty of natural shad to get out of the sun. There are a number of large hotels along this beach, but all are still relatively secluded and the beach does not have the mass tourism crowds, so even on a busy weekend your hotel’s section of the beach still feels private. We are staying at The H Resort (now known as the Story hotel). The resort offers modern suites and villas with indoor and outdoor seating, air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV and tea-and-coffee making facilities. The great feature of this hotel is that it has a number of restaurants including a Traders Vic’s and Seyshima Japanese restaurant. We are on half board which is a buffet in the main restaurant, but we can dine at the other restaurants for a supplement.

Day 6

We had organised a car and guide to take us around the island and also visit the local rum factory, Sadly, due to the coronavirus everywhere had started to close including the rum factory. But we had a good tour of the island and visited both its shoreline and inner tropical lush forest. We went to magnificent view point called the Missionary, which Queen Elizabeth had visited and had tea in the covered viewing post. We also visited the capital Victoria with its beautiful ornate Hindi temple and its mini golden Big Ben that now acts as a mini roundabout!

Days 7- 8

It was a shame that our last couple of days on Mahe was marred with the approaching Covid virus forcing the inevitable finality of the world having to close down. But the Seychelles were so beautiful that Lyn and I had made a pact to come back some time in the near future.

Norway’s Coastal Kitchen With Hurtigruten

One of our most asked questions from customers travelling along the Norwegian coast with Hurtigruten is what is the food like on board? Will it just be reindeer meat and fish? The answer is most definitely no!

You will get to discover traditional Norwegian cuisine and Hurtigruten of course cater to all dietary requirements, including a tasty vegan menu. The ships visit 34 ports during the 12 day voyage and in 15 of those ports is when they take in fresh food supplies for you to enjoy. At these ports, fresh seafood, eggs, poultry, dairy products, mustard, syrup, salt, mushrooms, berries, fruits and vegetables are brought directly on board. Local deliveries reduce food miles and optimise the use of port facilities. It’s good for the environment, it inspires the chefs and it’s good for you.

As a result of getting seasonal fresh food on board on a regular basis means that you get the chance to choose between different menus to suit your taste. Therefore, what type of food can you expect on your Norwegian holiday with Hurtigruten? Let’s have a look at the different restaurants that are available on the ships and the food that is served in them.

Torget – Main Restaurant

This is the restaurant where you will have most of your meals during your time on board.

Breakfast is a buffet of all things tasty. There are hot dishes available as well as cold elements such as cured meats and local cheeses that can be enjoyed with fresh bread. Granola, fruit and jams are also available to eat. Of course, we can’t forget that there will also be some local fish such as smoked salmon.

Lunch is all about the traditional husmannskost (traditional rustic dishes) from the region in which you are in on that day. At each meal, you get a choice of one meat, fish or vegetarian meal that all come with some bread and local cheeses. There is also a selection of salads and cold cuts to have too as well as some more fish to try such as salmon, herring and other seafood.

Dinner in Norway is perfectly summed up as being farm-to-table dining. You will experience the best of traditional Norwegian cuisine with a choice of meat, fish and vegan dishes available to choose from.

Kysten – Á la Carte Restaurant

The a la carte restaurant on board is something not to be missed! It does come as a supplement but for something special and a little different during a 12 day voyage, it is well worth it. Choose from a wide selection of innovative dishes based on high quality, local produce that each have a story to tell. If you like your desserts, you will love the ones in this restaurant.

Multe (on refurbished vessels only)

As the ships get refurbished, a new dining option is available and is perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Indulge yourself with freshly baked cakes and pastries, smørbrød (open sandwiches with generous amounts of topping), smoothies, yoghurt with granola, a large assortment of local ice cream with homemade toppings alongside a nice hot drink. Perfect when you fancy a little snack after a morning or afternoon exploring beautiful Norway.

Brygga – Bistro/Café

If you fancy eating something a little lighter, head to Brygga for some light food options. You will find traditional husmannskost, soup of the day, fresh salads, wraps and sandwiches. Enjoy bistro dishes such as Hurtigruten’s signature burger and famous shrimp sandwich, sirloin steak, grilled salmon, locally inspired pizza, desserts and sweet cakes.

Explorer Bar – Panorama Bar

One of our favourite spots on the ships has to be the bar because it provides the most wonderful views of Norway’s coastline and fjords that will take your breath away with the panoramic windows. As you would expect from a bar, alcoholic and soft drinks are served as well as hot drinks too. There are also some snack platters for you to enjoy.

Recently, Bali has become one of our most popular honeymoon destinations and it is no surprise why this is so. It has amazing hotels with some of the best rooms you can unwind in after a day of exploring everything Bali has to offer all at a price that you would honestly think would be much higher than it is!

As you might already be able to tell, I love all things Bali so I thought I would talk about my favourite hotels. I was going to pick 5 but it was too hard to choose so ended up choosing 6! Viceroy Bali

I shall start with my favourite hotel in Bali, the Viceroy Bali on the outskirts of Ubud. It is perfect for a honeymoon as it is intimate and comes with the most romantic views. There are only 40 rooms (villas in fact) and all come with their own private pool. You get breath taking views of the rice paddy fields and Valley of the Kings whilst being not too far away from the centre of Ubud. A highlight for me is the restaurant Cascades as it sits in the treetops. However, the best part is that it is a family owned and run hotel. Working in a family business, I know only too well that you will get the very best service and experience here as they really do put their heart and soul into everything. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed in your time here.

The Samaya Bali

One of Seminyak’s best hotel is the Samaya Bali and it has be recognised as being a great place to stay by winning many awards. The hotel oozes luxury with impeccable service from the staff whilst retaining that friendly feel. All rooms come with their own pool but for honeymooners, a stay in one of the Royal Courtyard villas. They are more spacious and come with their own tropical garden, poolside day bed, private pool, a lush four poster bed and even your own butler! The ideal spot to spend your honeymoon and enjoy married life in. The beach here is lovely too. So tranquil and provides wonderful sunsets.

Alila Villas Uluwatu

If you are looking for a wellness retreat that is something out of this world, Alila Villas Uluwatu is just that. Situated on a clifftop above the Indian Ocean, the views are out of this world. You can enjoy the views wherever you are in the resort but my personal favourite spot would be in the 50 metre infinity pool that is also on the cliff edge. A stay here is all about luxury. The villas are incredibly luxurious and come with their own butler and private pool too. There really isn’t anything to not like about this hotel. My top tip is to book a dinner at the new restaurant Quila. It changes its menu every night but is a real exclusive experience limited to just ten guests each night. You will go on a culinary journey like no other that cannot be missed.

The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas

If you love the beach then you will love staying at the The Royal Santrian Luxury Beach Villas. If you also like the pool, then no worries because you probably have guessed by now but your room will come with its very own private pool too. You cannot get any better in beachfront luxury in Bali than here. The beach is on the picturesque shores of Tanjung Benoa overlooking the Indian Ocean. It is a secluded resort in two acres of exotic gardens providing the most intimate and relaxing atmosphere. It really is quite exclusive with just 20 villas in total allowing you to really escape and unwind from the busyness of daily life at home. Don’t worry, you won’t get too bored as there is plenty for you to do than just sit by the pool or on the beach. I recommend taking a private guided tour around the local area or do a cooking class that can be organised by the hotel.

Alila Ubud

I do love the Alila Ubud hotel for its stylish décor. I think that they have done a superb job of combining both contemporary style with traditional décor too that fits in perfectly with the hotels location. The views are lovely where you get to see both the famous rice paddies and rainforest. The rooms are very different to what you expect, which I love. They in fact sit on stilt-like treehouses. The infinity pool is a great spot to relax in. The pool alone has won many awards as you feel like you are almost floating above the Ayung River valley. I am a fan of wine and cocktails as well as quirky rooms and so Alila Ubud is perfect as the wine list is incredible and they have some very creative cocktails on the menu too.

The Laguna

The Laguna in Bali is one for the pool lovers. It is a very elegant resort and has no less than seven different lagoon pools that meander through the gardens. I like the fact that some of the pools have sand on the bottom of it to give you the feel like your at the beach without the issue of sand sticking to you when you get out. There is also a beach with a pool beside it so you can have best of both worlds without having to move to a different sunbed! The Deluxe Lagoon Access Rooms and Suites give you direct access to the lagoon straight from the balcony and so I highly recommend choosing one of these to stay in. The King of the Ice

Last week we talked all about the cute penguins that you can find in Antarctica. Today we are heading to the other coldest part of the planet into the Arctic and talking all about their famous animal – the Polar Bear. The Arctic is the only place where you can see them in their natural habitat. Some of you may know that Penny loves all cute animals but we are afraid to tell her that Polar Bears are not as friendly as they look. Luckily, if Penny or you get to see them ever, you won’t get too close and can enjoy their cuteness.

The Norwegian Svalbard islands are one of the top places to see the infamous Polar Bear. They are situated just 1,050 km from the North Pole giving them the perfect conditions for Polar Bears to survive. Spitsbergen is the largest Svalbard island and the numbers of polar bears have been steadily rising in recent years due to many conservation projects helping to protect these beautiful creatures since 2008.

This is great news considering how their habitat is changing not for the better with Global Warming. It is also due to us being conscious of the environmental impact that travel can have on habitats that we only promote Hurtigruten when visiting Svalbard. Their ships are extremely environmentally friendly with hybrid engines reducing their C02 emissions considerably. The whole team in the head office and on board the ships will only create itineraries and participate in activities that will not harm the environment – this is a priority for the whole company. As a result, we have faith that by travelling with Hurtigruten, you can get the best experience visiting Svalbard whilst also helping with local projects to protect the wildlife and environment.

Now let’s find out a little more about the Polar Bears themselves.

Our first fact is that the Latin name for polar bears is “ursus maritimus,” which means sea bear. In Inuit mythology, the polar bear is called Pihoqahiak, the “ever-wandering one.” We think that both names sum up the King of the Ice well.

Our favourite fact about Polar Bears is that they are in fact black in colour, not white! We know, we were shocked too when we read this and had to check this on multiple websites to be sure it was correct. Their skin underneath their fur is black to help absorb the heat from the sun. Their fur is in fact translucent that reflects the colour of their surroundings, namely the white ice. They need the fur to keep them warm and it even grows on the bottom of their claws to protect them from the cold ice.

You will see Polar Bears above sea but they are in fact known as marine animals. They can swim for days at a time until they reach a new ice flat and reach speeds of up to 10 kilometres per hour. They also spend very little time on land. When they are seen out of the water, the majority of the time they will be on frozen flats of sea ice for their food supply and not on solid land.

Their sense of smell is incredible! They can smell when their predator is as far away as 1 kilometre. They can also detect a seal when it is metre under the compacted ice and snow. Polar Bears can be very patient and will happily wait for a long time until the seal comes up for air as they know it will be worth it for the tasty meal they will have as a reward for their patience.

Polar Bears do not go into hibernation during the winter months. In fact no species of bear does this. They go into a state that is similar to hibernation where they conserve as much energy to help survive the cold, winter months but can easily be woken up if they are in danger or have been harmed. Females also wake up to give birth. The main reason for them not hibernating is simply because they are such big creatures. It would take them too much energy to go into this state to be able to do so.

The most common question we get asked about trips to Svalbard is when is the best time to go? It definitely has to be the summer months to get the best chance to see the Polar Bears. Throughout June to September, there is constant daylight so you have more time to see them. Also, the ice naturally starts to melt a little and the Polar Bears accumulate on the remaining ice packs and the area is much easier to navigate by boat, making them easier to spot. However, if you fancy a trip to Svalbard in the winter months, this is a good time also for something else spectacular – the Northern Lights. As Polar Bears do not hibernate, there is a chance you may see them in the winter months but the chance isn’t very high because of the limited hours of daylight, they are sleeping a lot plus they travel far out on the frozen seas.

Types of penquins you may see on an expedition cruise to Antarctica

When going on a trip to Antarctica, one of the many highlights is getting up close and personal with the many penguins. They might smell a little of fish but they are unbelievably cute and surprisingly friendly. There are a total of seventeen species of penguins in the world but only seven can be found in Antarctica. Four species live in Antarctica year-round whilst the other 3 only live there for part of the year.

We have received a significant interest in enquiries for Antarctica recently so we thought let’s find out more about the cutest residents on the cold continent.

Adelie Penguin

You are more likely to see these penguins on some of the many small islands from Spring to Autumn as they spend most of their time in the water during the winter months. Luckily, most of the trips to Antarctica are in this time frame too.

They like their food and will travel far to get a tasty dinner – up to 185-mile round trip! They mainly eat small sea creatures but are known to treat themselves to some squid. Adelie Penguins are also very considerate amongst genders so much so that each parent shares the childcare duties equally. Sounds like they have it all sorted.

Chinstrap Penguin

These penguins have a cheeky yet cute look about them. They get their name from the small strip of black feathers that go from the top of their head, all the way round their face and chin and back to the top – just like a chinstrap!

Chinstrap penguins are not afraid of a bit of drama to say the least. The male penguins find a nest to settle in whilst waiting for a female to mate with, yet she only has five days to show up otherwise he will get bored and look for another female. If the males can’t find a nest that they like, they are known to kick another couple out from their spot and settle there. The male Chinstrap Penguins may also have a wandering eye at times. If he gets caught with another female by the original mate, the two females will fight it out for his affection. Who would believe there would be so much drama in the penguin world?

Gentoo Penguin

We cannot get enough of the name of this species of penguins – Gentoo Penguin. They are the third largest penguin species but still much smaller than Emperor Penguins. As a result, they really aren’t the quickest when running on land. However, they more than make up for this when they are in the water. When diving, they have been known to reach speeds up to 22 miles per hour. They therefore spend most of the days hunting for krill, fish and squid if they are lucky.

King Penguin

King Penguins look extremely similar to the Emperor Penguin with both having the brightly coloured yellow and orange plumage that makes their black and white colour stand out even more. The easiest way to distinguish the two species is that the black feathers on the King Penguin are the lightest shade in all of the penguin species. In fact it looks much more like a dark grey.

King Penguins only spend part of their time in Antarctica as they like to escape during the really cold winter months. They also tend to reside more in the northern part of Antarctica so you are extremely likely to come across some of these cute fellows on your Antarctica trip. They like to breed in large colonies but may leave some of the chicks unattended during the winter months.

Macaroni Penguin

These are probably our favourite species of penguin simply because they are the most eccentric. They look eccentric as well as their nature being so too. Macaroni Penguins are small and stout in build and have bright yellow eyebrows called crests. We will be surprised if you do not see any of these cheeky penguins in Antarctica as there are plenty of them. In fact, it is believed by many that they are the most abundant species of penguins. They don’t stay in Antarctica for the whole year but when they do come back, they tend to head to the more southern part of the continent and particularly favour the small islands in the area.

Rockhopper Penguin

The Rockhopper Penguins are one of the more ornate in the penguin world. They also have bright yellow eyebrows that they use to attract a mate. These birds cannot get enough of the ice. They will often be found swimming between sub Antarctic islands. We love their party trick of shaking their heads so quickly that it looks like they have a halo.

The Rockhopper Penguins do not actually make it to Antarctica itself but you will hopefully catch of glimpse of them on the Antarctic islands during your journey to the south pole. The reason for this is that they like the rockier parts of this region and enjoy hopping from stone to stone. It is why they are called Rockhopper Penguins.

Emperor Penguin

The final species of penguin that you will get the chance to see on your Antarctica holiday is the Emperor Penguin. They are the largest species out of all the penguins where they can reach a height of up to 4 feet. They are known to be the boldest and best dressed penguins.

We love their community spirit. They remain as a team to help them navigate through the Antarctic conditions. They all huddle together to keep warm and take turns in the standing on the edge of the huddle so that they all get a chance of enjoying the warmest part. How nice is that? An interesting fact is that most Emperor Penguins never step foot on land. They breed entirely on sea ice and so for many, there is no need to go onto the land.

I was 12 years of age when I saw my first Bond film. I was invited with a few others to join our school friend’s birthday treat to see Diamonds Are Forever. I had never seen a film like this and being such an impressionable age in the early 70’s, I was asking myself wow, who is this man? Are there really men like this with an authorised license to kill? – I was hooked and my love for both films and books started.

My favourite Bond is Connery (Craig a close 2 ^nd ), My favourite film (though worst Bond actor) is On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and favourite book and film soundtrack is Live and Let Die.

What are yours?

When it comes to Bond Films the destinations are as key to the entertainment as much as the cars and villains. The new film No Time to Die has some of the most dramatic locations that make a great holiday and Suitcase has put a few ideas together:

Jamaica

Jamaica features in a number of Bond films and is where Ian Fleming had written all his books. He had purchased a small estate and built a villa which he named GoldenEye. The estate has now become a luxury boutique hotel.

Faroe Islands

Matera Italy

Perhaps the most striking location in the film, this designated UNESCO world heritage site sees Bond car chasing in the narrow streets. Once the “shame of Italy” due to it poverty-stricken residents and political opponents forced to live in cave dwellings, Matera has had a renaissance in recent times. The cave dwellings also featured in the film have been extensively renovated with some parts turned into boutique luxury hotels making this a splendid area to holiday.

Norway Atlantic Coast

The backdrops of a Bond film are a must as much as an exhilarating Car chase. In the film both are found together on Norway’s Atlantic Coast with its winding roads and bridges.

Our Favourite Glass Igloos To See The Northern Lights

The Northern Lights official name is the Aurora Borealis and are mother nature’s very own light show. It is a natural phenomenon that is on many people’s bucket lists due to the mesmerising vibrant colours formed during the show. An added bonus about travelling to see the Northern Lights is the beautiful destinations on where they take place. The countries offer a snowy wilderness like no other creating a truly magical feel inside you and offering some of the best experiences such as husky dog rides, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing to name a few.

When is The Best Time to go?

The most common assumption is that February is the best time to see the Northern Lights. This is a lie.

The Northern Lights are always there but they just appear to us at certain times when the weather conditions are good enough and it is dark outside. As a result, the best time to see them is anytime from October to the end of March. This is when the days are much shorter proving a lot more opportunity to see them.

If you want to enjoy the cities and towns where you can base yourself to see them without lots of snow, October and November are the best months. If you really want to enjoy the thrill of a husky ride or explore the Arctic wilderness on a snowmobile, the January to March is the time to travel.

What are the best countries to visit for the Northern Lights?

Countries in Scandinavia are the best spots in Europe to see the Northern Lights due to their Northernly location. Iceland is a popular destination for a weekend break. You get a really good chance of seeing the Northern Lights but you can also enjoy a relaxing dip in the Blue Lagoon and go on a tour looking out for the famous Giza’s. Iceland, in particular the capital city Reykjavik, is just below the Arctic Circle meaning that the conditions are good to see the Northern Lights but not necessarily the best.

For the best chance to see the Northern Lights Norway and Lapland in Finland or Sweden are excellent options as they are all above the Arctic Circle. They also offer great experiences such as husky rides and a trip on a snowmobile. As a travel agent “what is next on the bucket list” is constantly changing as every day is spent curating incredible itineraries to different destinations for our customers. But when we got the phone call from Hurtigruten to experience their Norwegian Coastal Voyage there was a real clamour and fight in the office to who was going – I won!

A Magical Experience

Having experienced and loving River Cruises, I had always imagined Hurtigruten Norwegian coastal Journey having a similar feel and adventure. I was not disappointed, and it was one of the most magical and enjoyable experiences I have had. A laid back and informal journey with excellent dining and tremendous scenery. I have often been to destinations and described the fantastic scenery from one day to the next, but on this trip the highlights of the scenery were not one day to the next, but one hour after another!

Hurtigruten Norwegian Coastal Route is a fleet of working ships delivering post and freight to 34 different ports on its 12-day round-trip voyage from Bergen to Bergen. The exciting news is that these ships visit remote villages on the shores of the deepest Fjords, where large cruise ships cannot reach, sometimes stopping for only 20 minutes whilst at other larger ports the ships are docked for most of the day, giving you plenty of time to do excursions. This trip is as much about being onshore as it is onboard allowing you to experience the real Norway and its people.

Bergen to Tromso

I am doing a short version of the trip, a 5-day journey Northwards from the city of Bergen to the northern city of Tromso that sits above the Arctic circle.

Each of the four seasons brings an entirely different experience on a Hurtigruten Ship and Norway’s coastline. I travelled in September just before the Northern Lights season, but with its amazing on shore autumn colours it is a good time for land-based excursions and water-based excursions.

Day 1: Our Adventure Begins

Day 1; Flew from Gatwick to Bergen. From the airport we went direct to ship where we were able to drop our bags and walk into the city centre for a couple of hours sightseeing. Returning to the ship, Richard With, we checked in and found our bags waiting in our cabins. Cabins are compact and wonderfully comfortable in a cosy way – but I am not going to spend anytime here other than to sleep. After settling in and familiarising myself with the ship it is now time for Dinner and what a fayre! Local sustainable food products are brought aboard daily for the most amazing Norwegian Coastal Kitchen dishes that are palatable with UK’s – meat/fish and vegetables.

Day 2: Hjorundfjord

September allows us to sail into the magnificent Hjorundfjord where a tender takes us onshore for a wander around the pretty village of Bjorke. The scenery of this fjord is simply breath-taking! We took advantage of a stop as we sailed back out of the fjord and strolled around the marina and fishing town of Alesund.

Day 3: Trondheim

We sail into the old medieval Viking capital of Trondheim. We have plenty of time to visit the Cathedral and walk round the old part of the city. The architecture of the buildings both in the centre and along the waterways can easily set your imagination to the past to how the Vikings mulled around and their long boats sailed out of the waterways into the open sea.

Day 4: The Arctic Circle

We cross the arctic circle and on board a ritual takes place where on deck one of the crew dresses as Neptune. I admit I simply stood at the back, as there were plenty of volunteers, to watch the dressed-up Neptune placing scoops of ice cubes down passenger backs, listening to their squeaks and squeals. We sail into the town of Bodo, where just south is the renowned tidal stream of Saltstraumen creating huge whirlpools as the outgoing and incoming tides of sea and fjord meet in a narrow channel. There is a coach excursion where you can watch this natural phenomenon from the bridge that spans the channel, but I opted for the exhilarating Rib excursion. After a dramatic whizz around the docks we went into the fjords and stopped to look at a school of porpoise and our skipper also explained how the fjords were created, before having another dramatic ride through and around these massive whirlpools that were several meters across – well worth doing!

Day 5: Lofoten Islands

We had sailed through the beautiful Lofoten Islands and the narrow Trollfjord, before arriving in Tromso late afternoon. This is where I got off but Tromso known as “the gateway to the arctic”, due to where many of the earlier polar expeditions commenced, has plenty to see and visit. We stayed overnight to connect with flights via Oslo back to UK. The modern Cathedral and Polar museum are worth a visit. Tromso itself had a charm that I felt still hung on to its original pioneer town/port days.

Itching For More

This was a trip that has left me itching to go back and do the full 12 days as my own holiday. I have one more highlight to tell you before I write off. At the beginning I told you I was travelling just before the Northern Light season – yet I did get to see the Northern Lights one evening! They were not over dramatic, due to time of year, but does endorse that Hurtigruten is truly one the best ways of guaranteeing seeing the Northern Lights in season.

Visit Kirkenes Snow Hotel

Visit the coolest hotel in the world and have a drink at Norway’s largest ice bar whilst also having the chance to see the Northern Lights if they decide to come out. Upon arrival you will receive a shot of crowberry before getting an exclusive showing of the hotel and some of its famous suites by the guide. Then you can wander over the reindeer and huskies that are nearby and get up close to them making some great photo opportunities. Before leaving, you get to enjoy a snack in front of a warm fire in the hotel’s restaurant. On the way back to the ship, you will have a quick stop at Prestfjellet Mountain for some truly magnificent views.

Enjoy A Husky Sledge Experience

Want to experience a thrilling dogsledding adventure across the frozen Arctic wilderness? Here is your chance. Before you start this thrilling adventure, you will be kitted out with all the warm outdoor clothing you need to go on top of your clothes to keep you as warm as possible and then you will meet the husky dogs. They are certainly eager to get going when you arrive. You will travel through wintry forests and snowy plateaus in the arctic wilderness as well as the Arctic Ice Dome upon your sled. Don’t worry though, each sledge has its own musher (guide) driving them so you can sit and relax enjoying the thrilling experience. Before leaving, you can enjoy a hot drink next to a campfire.

See The Midnight Concert At the Arctic Cathedral In Tromsø

There is perhaps no more beautiful way to experience Tromsø than by attending a midnight concert at the city’s iconic Arctic Cathedral. The Cathedral is famous for its modern architecture that enhance the acoustics of the music and singing inside. The midnight concert features a mix of Norwegian folk songs and sacred and classical musical selections that will certainly stir some emotions inside you. A look at the Eastern Wall behind the altar is a must as it is decorated with one of Europe’s largest stained-glass mosaic that is simply beautiful. This excursion is the perfect way to end a day.

Take Part in a Snowmobile Safari

If you fancy racing a snowmobile across a vast snowy expanse and meeting the people who live here then this excursion may be for you. This excursion only takes place in the height of winter as you drive across a frozen fjord. You will have guides looking after you throughout this wonderful experience who will throughout the time explain what it’s like in the Arctic climate and the unique wildlife that lives here. Once the journey has ended, you can enjoy a nice hot drink and a taste of dried reindeer meat before going back to the ship.

Visit The Russian Border

The town of Kirkenes is where East meets West as it is only a few short miles away from the Russian border. This excursion is a great way learn about the Norwegian and Russian culture and how they work alongside each other. Before the excursion begins, you will see how this is so with the street signs also being written in Russian and you will certainly here some Russian being spoken around the town. The Russian border takes place at Storskog and defines the border of the Schengen agreement also so is one of the most heavily guarded borders in the whole of Europe. You are not allowed to cross the border but you can most definitely take pictures. After visiting the border, the excursion continues onto Gapahuken Restaurant where you can taste some traditional Russian food and get some spectacular views of Russia.

8 Reasons to Love the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi coast in Italy is truly stunning! The views as you travel around the area are breath taking so it is no surprise it such a popular destination. The best time to visit here is between the May-June and September-October when the heat is not as sweltering as in the summer months. The area has everything to offer from some of the best restaurants in Italy, plenty of shopping and sightseeing to relaxing on beaches. There is something for everyone to do. We at Suitcase Travel have found our top 8 reasons to love the Amalfi coast.

1. We would definitely recommend hiring a car so you can explore what the coast has to offer as much as possible. The views from driving around the coast are spectacular. Beware of the cliffs though, they can be quite high giving you those spectacular views.ravello

2. Suitcase Travel recommends staying in Conca dei Marini as it is in a great location. It is only 10 minutes’ drive from Amalfi and 30 minutes from Positano, which are the two most popular destinations in the area. At Conca dei Marini, there are fewer tourists here but plenty of tasty local restaurants to choose from without the tourist prices. Our choice of hotel is the Il Saraceno Hotel.

3. For the best views, visit Ravello that sits high in the hills on the Amalfi coast. With its stupendous views, it is no wonder it is a tourist hot spot but please don’t let the tourists put you off as the views makes it all worthwhile. Ravello is also known for its beautiful gardens and its former bohemian residents such as Wagner, Virginia Woolf and DH Lawrence.

lemons4. You will try some of the best Limoncello here. Lemons and olives grow on the trees all around so trying out some Limoncello is a must. You’ll want to bring it all back with you.

5. We all love Italian food and the Amalfi coast will not disappoint. The area also has some of the best Italian seafood dishes you can find. If you’re not usually a fan of seafood, don’t be afraid to try something different as the food cooked here may change your mind. A great restaurant is Ristorante Risorgimento that is in the area of Conca dei Marini.

6. For those who like to relax on the beach, visit Furore and Duoglio beaches. Furore is a small village where the houses are painted. It also has a small beach at the bottom of the village, perfect for those who like a quiet beach. For Duoglio beach, you need to be fairly healthy to reach this beach as there are 400 steps in order to get here. However, it is compensated by the beauty of this beach with some of the cleanest water you will ever experience. If you like water sports, you can rent equipment for wind surfing, scuba diving and canoeing here.sorrento street

7. For a bit of shopping, Sorrento is a must! You will be spoiled for choice on the souvenirs in Sorrento, which aren’t the usual ‘kind you often find in souvenir shops as these are a cut above the norm. There are also lots to see such as the port, the cathedral Basilica di Sant’Antonino and the Museo Correale before wandering around the streets for a bit of shopping.

8. You may even want to stay a night in Naples as this is where many people fly in and out off when visiting the Amalfi coast. Naples is where pizza originates from so it’s the perfect excuse to indulge on one. It’s a well-known fact that you won’t find a better one anywhere else! Our favourite place is Pizzeria Trianon.

Experience the Magic of Marrakech

Marrakech is a city full of experiences; the hustle and bustle of the souks to the serene hotels that reside there; the bright colours and wonderful smells shining throughout; the unique architecture that surrounds the city. Penny from our marketing team spent a few days visiting this delightful city alongside the Moroccan Tourist Board and here’s what she has said about her time there.

Visiting Marrakech was an experience that I shall never forget and that I want to do again. It didn’t just live up to my expectations but went beyond them. I never realised that the city could provide so much for so many people. No matter what you like to do whilst on holiday, you will be able to do it in Marrakech.

I got to visit two very special hotels whilst in Marrakech; La Mamounia and Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury Resort. Both hotels ooze luxury, have exceptional spa facilities, rooms and suites to die for, bars you will never want to leave yet they are uniquely individual. A great way to enjoy both of these would be to enjoy the luxury of La Mamounia whilst visiting the busy city before heading to the Royal Palm where you can sit back and relax whilst enjoying the sun.

La Mamounia’s décor is more traditionally Moroccan but nevertheless still has many modern touches. It is probably Marrakech’s most famous hotel with many famous names staying there, most notable Winston Churchill on various occasions (he even had his own suite there!) It was also the backdrop for Alfred Hitchcock’s film ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’. Each room and suite comes with a balcony that offers views of the city or the Atlas Mountains. The bar in the hotel is a jazz bar and as a result is decked with photos of famous jazz musicians. This just adds to your experience whilst in Marrakech. The location of the hotel is also great as it’s only a few minutes’ walk from Jamaa el fna Square, Africa’s busiest square that is home to the souks and plenty of street food. The hotel is also close to the famous Majorel Garden and Menara, both a must to visit whilst in Marrakech.

The Royal Palm is a luxury resort provided by Beachcomber and is truly exquisite! There is no other way to describe it. The pools make you want to dive straight in before enjoying the sun sitting around them. Each room and suite have balconies so big you can fit a sofa and dining table on there so you can watch the world go by. The food is truly splendid, making your stay here even better. There is also a terrific golf course to hand! All of this is surrounded by breath-taking views of the Atlas Mountains. Even though it is a little less traditional in style than La Mamounia, there are still plenty of Moroccan touches throughout making you feel like you’re still in the heart of the city. The resort is a little out of the city but there is a free shuttle service.

On our final day, I headed towards the mountains to visit Terres D’Amanar. For those who like camping but with a bit more luxury i.e. ‘glamping’, this is somewhere you should stay for a few nights to get away from the busyness of daily life. You can choose to stay in a lodge or in some special tents that look tiny from the outside but are in fact quite large on the inside. The place promotes itself as The Digital Escape and with various outdoor activities to hand you will not be missing your technology. It has the largest Zip Line in Africa, which is part of a course where there are four zip lines in total. A great choice for thrill seekers and to get some magnificent views! There are also e-bikes, horse riding, archery and trails to go running and walking along to name a few. Terres D’Amanar is great for families as well as for groups or couples to enjoy the great outdoors.

So whether you want to immerse yourself into the busy market and street food stalls, enjoy a good spa, have plenty of delicious food, experience the great outdoors, flop by the pool or even have a good game of golf, Marrakech has it all! There is so much to see and do you are likely to want to come back again – I know I do!
